In memory of Koko The Gorilla! Who I personally, have been in love with and admired the second I found out about her.
"The Gorilla Foundation is sad to announce the passing of our beloved Koko," the research center says, informing the world about the death of a gorilla who fascinated and elated millions of people with her facility for language.
Koko, who was 46, died in her sleep Tuesday morning, the Gorilla Foundation said. At birth, she was named Hanabi-ko — Japanese for "fireworks child," because she was born at the San Francisco Zoo on the Fourth of July in 1971. She was a western lowland gorilla.
"Her impact has been profound and what she has taught us about the emotional capacity of gorillas and their cognitive abilities will continue to shape the world," the Gorilla Foundation said.
Throughout her life, Koko's abilities made headlines. After she began communicating with humans through American Sign Language, she was featured by National Geographic — and she took her own picture (in a mirror) for the magazine's cover.
That cover came out in 1978, seven years after Koko was chosen as an infant to work on a language research project with the psychologist Francine "Penny" Patterson. In 1985, the magazine profiled the affectionate relationship between the gorilla and her kitten: Koko and All Ball.
In 2001, Koko made a fast friend in comedian Robin Williams, trying on his glasses, showing him around and getting him to tickle her. Then they made faces at each other — and the gorilla seemed to recall seeing Williams in a movie. Years later, in 2014, Koko was one of many who mourned Williams' passing.
Koko amazed scientists in 2012, when she showed she could learn to play the recorder. The feat revealed mental acuity but also, crucially, that primates can learn to intricately control their breathing — something that had been assumed to be beyond their abilities.
"Famously, Koko felt quite sad in 1984 when her adopted kitten Ball was hit by a car and died. How do we know? Here is nonhuman primate grief mediated through language: In historical footage in the film, Patterson is seen asking Koko, "What happened to Ball?" In reply, Koko utters these signs in sequence: cat, cry, have-sorry, Koko-love. And then, after a pause, two more signs: unattention, visit me."
Thousands of people are commiserating on the Gorilla Foundation's Facebook pageposting about Koko's death. The top comment comes from Jess Cameron:
"Legit bawling like a baby right now. This news just breaks my heart. From an early age I was fascinated with Koko and she taught me so much about love, kindness, respect for animals, and our planet."
With Koko's passing, the Gorilla Foundation says it will honor her legacy, working on wildlife conservation in Africa, a great ape sanctuary in Maui, Hawaii, and a sign language app.
The foundation says those who want to share condolences can do so by emailing [email protected].

Coach Speak: Prather thankful for everything basketball has given him | News, Sports, Jobs

OLINDA — Basketball has remained a constant for Scott Prather, who smiled through his face mask while talking about his long journey as a player, coach, teacher, father and athletic director.
After 14 years and counting with the Seabury Hall program, and prior to that eight years starring at Maui High and the University of Hawaii-Hilo, Prather couldn’t help but acknowledge all the people and opportunities that the sport has led him to.
“It’s been a really great experience, mainly because I got to work with just some fantastic players over the years that were really just a joy to work with and a joy to watch grow, and the same can be said about my students,” Prather said on Wednesday afternoon at his office inside the Erdman Athletic Center. “I’ve also got to work with some really great coaches — just a lot of these guys who have been really good men in my life and good influences to be around, the list goes on and on.”
Prather said he’s still settling in as the athletic director since assuming the position in 2019, and still plans on coaching the boys basketball team and teaching one math class via distance learning if everything pans out amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
“There’s a lot to this job that you have to learn through experience and I think that every single day has been different, the learning curve is huge and I’m doing my best to figure things out,” he said. “The good news is I have really good people to work with. We all support each other and have each other’s backs, so I’m not doing it alone.”
Scott Prather reminisces on Wednesday afternoon at his Seabury Hall office while going through albums of old newspaper clippings and photographs from his high school and college basketball playing days. — The Maui News / MATTHEW THAYER photo
Former Seabury athletic director, Steve Colflesh, who ran the department for 30 years before retiring in 2013, says the school was “lucky” to hire Prather back in 2006, though Prather says that he was the fortunate one to join “such a special school.”
Colflesh added that Prather has developed a quality basketball program that stresses “discipline, fundamentals and organization.”
“He is following that same path as an athletic administrator. He’s working hard and has a solid vision for the program’s future,” Colflesh said. “Scott has a tremendous work ethic and his character is beyond reproach. He’s humble and yet very proud, which makes him a strong competitor.”
Prather grew up in Kula, where he first picked up a basketball. He later became a star player for the Sabers under former head coach Bill Naylor.
With over 18 years of coaching experience between Maui High and St. Anthony, Naylor said he’s had the privilege to work with “a lot of great players,” but Prather stood out to him the most back then and still stands out now with the work he is doing as a Spartans coach and AD.

“Scotty was the best example of a player who demanded of himself really more than he had,” said Naylor, who was also the assistant boys basketball coach for Prather’s first two years at Seabury. “I had to kick him out of the gym after practice many times as he needed to hit a certain percentage of shots and he hadn’t yet reached that goal.
“There is only one Scotty P. and there will never be another like him.”
Although the Spartans were stacked with talent in the late ’90s, Colflesh recalled they were unable to beat the Sabers while Prather was on the team.
“He led his team as he’s leading the Seabury Hall program today, with perseverance,” Colflesh said. “That strong work ethic and a great drive to succeed. He’s special.”
At UH-Hilo and standing 5-foot-11, Prather was a four-year starter from 1998 through the 2001-02 season. His 37-point performance against NCAA Division I South Carolina State in 2001 ended the Vulcans’ 23-game losing streak in the Big Island Invitational. He was later named to the 2001-02 all-Pacific West Conference first team and in 2012, he was inducted into the UH-Hilo Athletic Hall of Fame.
After finishing up his collegiate career, Prather continued his basketball evolution by volunteering as a junior varsity assistant boys coach at Waiakea High School, which was “really eye-opening, rewarding, and fulfilling in a lot of ways,” he said.
But when it came down to it, Prather was a Maui boy.
“I wanted to be closer to my family, closer to my roots, and that’s kind of where my heart drew me,” he said. “I think when people come back to where they are from, I think it brings a lot of credibility with them, and you have the accomplishments and the accolades from high school, and in college, and you come back and you share those experiences with the younger generation, I think it really gives them hope and a dream and a goal, and something tangible to aspire to.”
Back in the 1980s, very few student-athletes who left the Valley Isle returned to the sports community, Naylor said.
“Now we have several coaches in many sports that have come back home and joined coaching staffs, many of them now head coaches,” Naylor said. “This is great for island sports, and I’m proud to have shared the court with them.”
Through Prather’s basketball evolution and working alongside other coaches and mentors on island, Prather said his coaching philosophies have transformed.
Stemming from his background as an athlete, Prather used to focus a lot on discipline and conditioning, and instilling work ethic into the players. Although those are still valuable pieces to the game, he said the biggest part now is mentoring Maui’s young basketball players.
“It’s really understanding them as people and trying to get to the heart of what really motivates them, and it wasn’t the fear of running, but the real joy of playing and learning the game,” he said. “That’s something we really focus more on now.”
And when the Spartans are motivated and work hard together, they play cohesively together. The Seabury boys have claimed the past 11 Maui Interscholastic League Division II championships. However, Prather said that one of the highlights that stands out above the rest is the team’s first league title over Molokai during the 2006-07 season.
“It gave all the guys on the team this belief that we can do this, we can make some noise in this league,” he said. “It was awesome to see their mindsets change.”
The other was in 2016, when the Spartans’ Cameron Hanisch made a buzzer-beating 3-pointer in overtime to topple top-seeded St. Francis and advance to the state championship game.
“Of all the moments, that was a special one for sure,” Prather said. “That’s not going to be forgotten anytime soon.”
To any student-athlete looking to compete after high school, Prather advises to put in the work, time and effort, but most importantly, “just believe in yourself.”
“I think there’s a natural sense that people elsewhere, off this island and in other places, are just better because there’s more competition, there’s more this or more that, and we have a tendency for the island guys to kind of get swallowed up,” he said. “The truth of the matter is that there’s a lot of good players here with tons of talent, tons of ability, that can play at that next level if they really believe in themselves. They can do it.”
Prather, 40, is still seen playing pickup basketball games around the community, just staying in shape and continuing to participate in the sport that has been a huge part of his life for so long.
“I still very much love the game, I’ve had to adjust as father time changes the way you feel, but I want to actively demonstrate to the kids that I’m coaching how to do certain things, so by keeping active in the sport, it helps me to be a better example when I’m coaching,” he said. “It’s been a journey for sure, it’s had its ugly moments, twists and turns, but overall I think it’s been a fun ride.”

How Gonzaga upset Duke in the Maui Invitational final
The ‘Zags ended Duke’s unbeaten season in Maui.
There was talk that Duke could go undefeated heading into the Maui Invitational. TV networks were filled with debates center on whether the Blue Devils could beat the Cleveland Cavaliers. Duke was the No. 1 team in the polls, the team with the top three freshmen in the sport, and the team expected to cut down the nets in March.
Gonzaga just outlasted them in the championship game of the Maui Invitational.
The ‘Zags held on to beat Duke 89-87 in Maui. It completes a three-game sweep for Gonzaga at the tournament that also included wins over Illinois and Arizona.
Gonzaga’s offense was on fire early and was able to get enough stops late. Mark Few’s team shot 52 percent from the field and made 10-of-19 attempts from three-point range. The Bulldogs spread offense attacked center Marques Bolden from early in the first half to build the lead. They were able to seal the win by shutting down Duke’s drives to the paint in crunch time.
Here are three things we learned from Gonzaga’s win over Duke.
1. Gonzaga is a legitimate national title contender
The ‘Zags were our No. 3 team in the preseason. That ranking factored in Killie Tillie, the stud junior forward who is sidelined until at least January after ankle surgery. That Gonzaga just did that to Duke without its best player only confirms this is a real threat to win it all in Minneapolis come early April.
Rui Hachimura and Zach Norvell carried the scoring for the ‘Zags. Hachimura dominated the paint to finish with 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Norvell challenged Duke star R.J. Barrett on both ends all night to finish with 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting, 4-of-6 from three-point range.
Senior center Brandon Clarke also deserves praise. Clarke, a transfer from San Jose State, keyed the ‘Zags backline defense and never backed down against Zion Williamson.
The ‘Zags are a complete team with very few holes — and that’s without Tillie. Watch out for the Bulldogs.
2. Duke finally looked like the freshmen-laden team they are
When Duke plays its best game, no team in the country should be able to beat them. Duke did not play its best game — or even close to it — against Gonzaga on Wednesday.
Barrett got his numbers (23 points), but it took him 25 shots to get there. Barrett was shut down by Gonzaga late in the game, failing to convert four straight attempts on the final possessions. Williamson helped Duke stake its second half comeback but barely touched the ball on the final possessions. Cameron Reddish, meanwhile, was glued to Coach K’s bench.
Duke battled back from a big deficit and could have won at the end, but poor shot selection and questionable rotation choices cost them in the end. Duke is still the most talented teams in the country, but the way Gonzaga attacked them in the first half will be on every coach’s television screen all season long.
3. This game was incredible
What an atmosphere in Maui. Two elite teams going back-and-forth in a terrific game. Don’t be surprised if you see both of these squads in the Final Four.
We had highlight blocks from Zion Williamson:

Don’t wait until March to watch college hoops. It’s already great in November.

So I just watched the live-action Aquaman movie for the first time, and it was better than I expected. Several things I noticed in the movie were similar to other movies. Here is a non-comprehensive list: (you’re welcome) (spoiler alert)
Coruscant from the Star Wars prequels. Except it was underwater. The traffic in the city of Atlantis seemed to be flying cars which could fly at whatever “altitude” they want, and they could even dive downwards or swim upwards vertically through the layers of traffic.
Atlantis. Duh. That’s the capital of the sea kingdom or whatever, and it is similar to the Atlantis in the Disney movie that is called “Atlantis.” They both have fish-shaped underwater space ships. And of course they both started out above ground but sunk into the ocean.
Avatar (James Cameron). Lots of glow-in-the-dark, effervescent, beautiful special effects for the seas teeming with life. They even had floating jellyfish things.
Journey to the Center of the Earth. They literally go on a journey into the center of the earth, and it looks similar to the movie with that name, a beautiful tropical paradise with mossy rocks and waterfalls—which also, again, reminded me of Pandora from Avatar.
The Lion King. The plot was a rightful king left his country and didn’t want to be king, but eventually came back and saved the kingdom from his evil relative, because a woman of royal blood found him and urged him to return and to take his rightful place as king. Like what Nala did with Simba.
The Abyss. The aliens he found at the bottom of the deep trench (hence the movie title “Abyss”) threatened to destroy the entire world with tsunamis because humans were so belligerent and unworthy, but because the aliens saw that one man was willing to sacrifice his life for the sake of the whole planet by disabling the nuclear bomb at the bottom of the ocean, they relented and decided not to flood the entire planet. In Aquaman, this happened too, except it was the bad guys flooding the beaches and spitting up all the trash in the sea back onto the land. But they refrained from flooding the whole world and drowning everybody.
The Little Mermaid. Ariel was a fish out of water who fell in love with a human. Same with Atlanta, Queen of Atlantis, and the land-dwelling man, who together had Aquaman as their son.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Aquaman could telepathically control sea creatures. Harry talked to a snake and set him free at the zoo. Also similar to how Ant-Man can summon and control an army of ants.
Finding Nemo. They’re both underwater, obviously. Then they also had a “Ring of Fire,” except for Nemo it was a fish tank fraternity initiation, and for Aquaman it was a battle challenge for the throne, also similar to Black Panther. Also both Finding Nemo and Aquaman moves the story along by riding inside a whale’s mouth.
Thor Ragnarok. The ring of Fire ended up being an underwater arena with thousands of cheering and booing fans, similar to the contest of champions headed up by Jeff Goldblum in Ragnarok. Both Aquaman and Thor wield a very powerful magical weapon (trident and Mjolnir) that only they can wield. And they both had to earn the title of “worthy” before they could wield it.
Iron Man. One of the villains, the Black Manta, invented his own super-powered suit, and the engineering montage reminded me of Tony Stark building his suits. So he’s like Iron Man but he’s a bad guy this time.
Moana. Take one good look at Aquaman and tell me he doesn’t remind you of Maui, the demigod from Moana. They both are covered with tattoos. They’re both demigods (Aquaman is a half-breed: half Atlantian, half human). And they both speak in this irreverent, casual manner making fun of everything.
I’m sure I haven’t even scratched the surface of other movies that this movie borrowed from. Not a bad thing, I liked the movie, I just wanted to share my thoughts.
Sorry for the long post: here’s a potato 🥔
